Merit in India is misunderstood thoroughly.Merit is not mere academic excellance.Merit is the ability of individuals to practice what they have learnt from their academic exercise to the benefit of the cociety at large.Glorifying students as heroes and heroines when they score high marks will create only pseudoelitism among them. This is specially true in India as mugging up is the endeavour that leads to scoring high marks.I don't know whether this is the way merit is decided in developed countries.
Sports and games are for recreation and physical fitness. Alas! it has been converted into a career for amassing wealth and into a show biz by the misguided.
